I had a miserable speed too until last year they upgraded "my" base
station to 3G, which I did not really hope for, because I also live in
rural area pretty far from "civilization".

And if the network coverage is weak, then at least here they are
selling modems that already have a connector for external antenna.
Since members of this list are people with at least some degree of
technical skills, I think that asking a soldering gun to help in
adding a "support" for bigger antenna might not be the biggest
problem.

Now I am using 3G/GSM modem, but before that I had a CDMA (which AFAIK
is a lot more popular in US than GSM) modem and with external antenna
I had a signal from a base station ~20 km away (my house is surrounded
by trees and the topology also is against me, so with better
conditions the results can be even better). Signal strength was not
that bad, but I gave up due to disruptions in connection - internet
was working for 5 min, then not working for 5 min, then working again
and so on. When working, the speed was really good, but the
instability really pissed me and other family members off.

So my conclusion is -You don't get, if You don't ask. It might be
worth checking again. And weak network coverage can be solved for
modem.
