I did it to both before ever starting the install. Bought about 9 months
apart, the first one sits totally idle till I turn on the
monitor to do something. The newer one pulses the drive access led at
nominally 1.1 second intervals, on a 24/7/365 basis. And it
crashes more often when stopping lcnc. Both do, but the newer one does it 3x
more often.

I would like to have been a bug in the earpiece of BO's phone when Angela
called. I could probably have learned some profane new ways to question
BO's family tree, in German and English. And it does need questioned.
Unforch, this is not answering the OP's question, not even on topic to it.
We should be asking if he has turned hyperthreading off in the bios, and
what extra arguments if any he is using on his grub.cfg kernel line.
Hyperthreading needs to be off, as evidenced by the demsg output only
listing 2 cores, not 4, and the "linux" line in his /boot/grub/grub.cfg
entry needs to read:
menuentry 'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-122-rtai' --class ubuntu --class gnu-linux
--class gnu --class os {
recordfail
insmod ext2
set root='(hd0,1)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 06cb5bee-dd7e-42be-a4b6-d42fbdf5ce0c
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-122-rtai
root=UUID=06cb5bee-dd7e-42be-a4b6-d42fbdf5ce0c ro quiet splash isolcpus=1
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-122-rtai
}
Note the isolcpus=1 on the end of the 'linux' line, it has to be hand
edited into that file after the installation is done, and then rebooted
again to enable it. The UUID's should be different from the above.
