Actually, I did it without much of that knowledge. Start with the recommended fresh installation procedure and go with the current stable version and the recommended version of Linux. I installed Linux then installed LinuxCNC. The bit I found a bit awkward was a little later on when I found I had to deal with the Update Manager. Not a major headache, though.
