The really BIG FPGAs are huge amounts of configurable logic. You can probably fit 100 old 370 computers in there and run them at 10X the original clock speed.
Possibly these also get used for simulation of chip designs and such stuff. But, obviously the market for a $50K chip must be QUITE narrow. And, thinking of a whole board covered in these chips makes my knees start quivering. I use the $13 Xilinx Spartan 3A 50 and think it is just great! Smallest of the family, but plenty of resources for me.
