Joint 2 error on a 2 axis machine, hmm.
Would it only have joint 0 & 1?
Is it possible you opened a 3 axis config?

I should have mentioned the two axes are X and Z.  X is axis/joint 0
and Z is axis/joint 2.

That may work, the skipping of Y, but it may also be part of the problem.
Is lathe defined in the .ini file?

It's not a lathe, it's a saw beveler with a long X axis and a short Z axis.  It's worked that way for over 10 years now.  In the docs, The Z axis is called Axis 2.  The Y axis is Axis 1 and the X axis is Axis 0.  There is no Y axis to define in the ini or hal files.
