Yes, counts go up and down, depending on the direction I turn the spindle,
either manually or under power.
Hmmm, the mystery deepens! Well, it may be that the encoder
index-enable connection in hal is not set up correctly.
Although, it seems that in that case it would never begin
the Z move.
