volume set before video play is an annoyance bug really. not a showstopper, but
there is a possible workaround - once you get your first frame from vlc -
forcibly set volume/mute etc. again.

this may or may not be a bug in vlc itself - don't know. what i do know is that
vlc seems to change behavior/api from version to version so to some extent it's
libvlc's issue too (at least cedric believes so). i would concur as the generic
player and related code basically didn't change but along the way all sorts of
things changed as vlc versions did. :)
