I saw a discussion a few month back on vlc forum about issue regarding sounds (that's what I was refering to when refering to bug in libvlc). I think they did update their documentation since then as you can see the warning/note in the libvlc_audio_set_mute API ( http://www.videolan.org/developers/vlc/doc/doxygen/html/group__libvlc__audio.html#ga438620a3c817b8b4faceb77c476b89fe ).
