Last time I did this was when a C2 freaked out and I had to upload new firmware 
using the console port.  In this case the diagnostic login prompt was 
"administrator".  Not sure about DFE but try the same password.

As to what diagnostic mode is used for, look in the manual or knowledge base!  
It's a sort of First Aid when the switch doesn't boot up due to corrupt 
firmware (you might want to try an XMODEM upgrade to see if it helps - see this

You don't normally need to boot up in diagnostic mode (did you press a key to 
make this happen?).

If you manage to login to the diagnostics, try starting the operational code 
from there.
