I tried to turn it off initially by just clicking on the window containing
it and that caused the inevitable crash. I finally found by chance the
command under help and turning it off stopped the crashes. I still wonder
what the purpose is of having Office Assistant if having it on results in
such instability. Is this another Microsoft invention or is it a bug and if
the latter is there a way round it?
