The reason I don't use Jan's workaround (thanks for trying, Jan :-)) is that if I don't delete (from the server) or fully receive these messages, they do indeed stay on the server. I've long been aware of this, which is why I don't move them to the Deleted Items folder until this is done. Otherwise they sit on the server and clog it up. About a year ago I posted a question to the newsgroup asking why my Progress window showed that 6 or 7 messages were coming in but only 2 or 3 would show up in my Inbox. I think at that time, Paul, you (or someone) told me to check Online Access. That's where the missing messages were, of course, and it was because I didn't at the time know what the torn envelope symbol signified. A few minutes ago, when I switched over to OE to receive the second test message I'd sent, both the first and second test messages showed up (along with your list reply, Paul). The reason was that I hadn't yet dealt with the first message's torn envelope and it was still on the server, so both downloaded (fully!) in OE.
