To all: thank you for the comments and advice. At this point, I think I cannot install the update as it is apparent that there is a significant risk that my office installation will be corrupted and unusable. This is a risk I cannot take as Entourage is currently a critical application.

Is it possible to pull the updated files out of the installer and replace them by hand? That way I know what to put back if there is a problem.
