If you had entered birthdays into the Calendar from contacts' birthday field in the Address Book, you just got rid of them too (at least if entered a real birthdate with correct year. If they have this year's date they might still be there.) In the Address Book, add a Birthday column (View/Columns), click on its header to sort by Birthday. You'll easily see all the contacts who have birthdays bunched at the top.
