IT'S THE OUTGOING EMAIL ITSELF, WITH ATTACHMENTS OR DOCUMENTATION AS TO WHAT
WAS ATTACHED AT THE TIME SENT.

Actually, I tried this and got the window stating one (1) file was linked,
and it was, but the fact there is a linked file is not readily apparent in
the relevant column view of email, namely the "paper clip" icon. Moreover,
when composing an email -- the time when you are attaching items to be sent
-- before you can "link" my entourage states that the user must "save" the
item. Doing this results in a draft of the document once saved appearing in
the draft list, but then it can have a link established. Thus, overall this
method requires at least twice as many steps as simply attaching something
in the first place, and the step to create a "saved" version; plus you still
have to run the suggested outgoing rule. In addition, the saved copy of the
email does not depict the name of the linked file(s) in the body of its text
(which is where I would want it, just above the "sig" as in a normal letter
ending with cc's and then a list of attachments), meaning that the user must
open the link(s) to see if the link was to a file and, if so, to what
one(s).

For future ENTOURAGE development, why not allow for attachment(s) by alias
or the equivalent, with a similar icon to appear in the "paperclip" column
(not the link column, where it can take on multiple meanings), so users (not
just scripters) could visually determine the nature (and thus bulk) of the
various attachments, and an option built in (preference?) to remove those
"actual" (and bulky) attachments where there the file name is recorded once
successfully sent, substituting or retaining just the attachment(s)' file
name(s) or what's shown now in the link, once opened.

Over time, this could result in a great savings of space within the overall
identify(ies) each installed Entourage must contend with. (Perhaps MS, if
not MBS, in cahoots with manufacturers of hard drives and other storage
media? ;) )
