I leave every incoming message that does not require special archiving in my Inbox. After 365 days messages are deleted from my Inbox via a repeating schedule that is execute every 12 hours. This leave me perpetually with one year archive of all incoming messages. Spam is filter and moved to a spam folder and then it is automatically discarded after 7 days by the same repeating schedule used above. I have similar folders and schedules for mail such as this group list.
