Disk Utility doesn't attempt to repair anything in the Users directory so
this check would have to be done manually - though I'm not really convinced
that this is an issue related to permissions. The error message might not
always be particularly specific, but I've found MS apps to be pretty 'vocal'
if you accidentally lock them out of a needed file or directory.

FWIW, I have a user on E'rage 2004 who is having the same problem with her
POP account as Andrew. The Database Utility reports her mail db to be in
good shape so I'm thinking it's a bug.
