FWIW
I had similar problems with Earthlink this week and have filed a formal
complaint with them. My situation is this: my ISP is Charter
Communications (cable), and I have (business) web hosting through Earthlink.
I suddenly became unable to send e-mail through my business address
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) but could receive e-mail. Sending/receiving
e-mail from my (free) charter.net addresses worked fine, and internet access
was not a problem.
I called Earthlink who insisted that Charter had changed SMTP (outgoing
mail) settings and that I must contact Charter for the new settings. I
adamantly protested that this made no sense, but decided to pacify Earthlink
by contacting Charter. As I expected, Charter had changed no
configurations. While on hold, I logged into my Earthlink Control Center
and looked at my Mailbox Settings. (I had not looked at these settings
since the time I initially set up the mailbox over three years ago. The
instructions at that time said: SMTP server is smtp.earthlink.net.) When I
inspected the Mailbox Settings a couple of days ago, I discovered that the
instructions were changed (even though I was _never_ notified by Earthlink
that this was going to change): SMTP server is your ISP's server.
That was all I needed to know. In my Entourage Account settings, I changed
SMTP settings from smtp.earthlink.net to smtp.charter.net, and all is well
again. Both my ISP (Charter) and web hosting provider (Earthlink) are now
aware of this "issue" and will hopefully relay this information to customers
with similar problems.
BTW If your using OS 9.x and your ISP is Earthlink, it looks like your
Sending Mail (SMTP Server) should be smtpauth.earthlink.net and your
Receiving Mail (pop server) should be pop.earthlink.net. See:

Sorry to be long-winded, but maybe something here will help in some way.
