1) It appears that the company hosting johnfquinn.com for you
(ipowerweb.net) does not support port 587 or port 465 (my attempt to
telnet to both of those ports on mail.johnfquinn.com) times out. Not all
ISPs do. So that is not a solution for you.

2) and 3) You're not a customer of theirs so of course it won't. Why would
you expect either of them to be able to authenticate your ipowerweb.net
account?

When you connect to a non-local SMTP server to relay mail, it must be one
on which you have an account as it will require authentication (otherwise
it's an open relay which is a very bad thing).

With optonline.net blocking port 25 and ipowerweb.net not supporting
alternate submission ports, that's all you can do.

And as you found out, you can send as your johnfquinn.com address via the
optonline.net (there are some ISPs who won't let you do that but I would
steer well clear of such ISPs as there are many valid reasons to send that
way such as you are doing).
