I see that you have Office 10.1.6 installed. You need to update. Under Help
in the menu bar select "Check for Updates". Often an update will fix a
problem a user is experiencing. I'm not sure this is your case, regardless
you need to upgrade.

It's not normal to have to force quit an application. It's easier to
troubleshoot when you know where to focus your attention. Eliminate problems
in your User's folder by creating a new User in System Preferences. Now test
your Office applications. Does the problem go away? If yes, then the problem
is in your User's folder. If not, then you need to do an archive and install
of the OS. 

Problems in your User's folder could be font related or corrupt preferences.
Database corruption is also often the culprit, but the description of your
problem seems not to indicate database corruption.
