Multiple identities is not a requirement for accessing multiple accounts. I
have one identity and always have but it has access to a bunch of different
e-mail accounts. If you're using POP, rules can be used to direct mail to
different folders based on what account received it. If you're using IMAP,
everything normally will just stay in it's correct account.

This has the added advantage of not having to switch just to see if mail
came in for a particular account. Using multiple identities to manage
multiple accounts seems to me to be what would be a major pain in the neck.
