Thanks Diane
I have tried everything you recommend several times including in
desperation dragging my 2008 folder across on the network to my wife's
machine however it still baulks when it gets to the transfer of
identity. I guess we will just have to live with the two systems, it's
very frustrating and I don't usually quit but I have wasted a whole
day now.
thanks again

I am installing Office 2008 and all goes well until we get to setup

Did you log out/in with shift key down to disable all running
applications?
There are several gotchas installing Office 2008. This is one of the
biggest
errors.
Sometimes it's easier to start over than try to fix.
Quit all Microsoft applications (Easy way: log out/in with Shift key
down to
disable any startup items.)
Drag the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash.
Empty Trash.
Reinstall Office 2008 from your original installation disk. See details
