Can I recommend (again) the fabulous EF 20-35 f3.5 USM lens for your
purposes. Not only is it sharp and contrasty but zooms back to 35 which
would be perfect for non closeup portraits you mention. It's autofocus is
very very fast and precise. Besides, with the money you save, you can get
another lens. It's small and light, but very well built. Blue sky photos
look like you used a polarizer. Heck, you don't need a polarizer with this
lens.
