I own an EF 24/2.8, and don't consider the auto-focus to be a critical
requirement.  Anything farther than about 6 feet is essentially at infinity
focus.  In fact, I once accidentally switched it to MF and didn't realize
it.  I still got the focus confirmation beep when I "focussed" on something.
