The 220Ex and 380EX are E-TTL only.  The 550EX can be switched between
E-TTL amd TTL.  I'm not 100% sure, but I think the 420EX is E-TTL only. 
All EX speedlites are TTL only with type "B" bodies or when used with a
Hot Shoe Adapter on an "A" type body **.

** use a Hot Shoe Adapter between your Elan II and EX speedlight to get
"simple" TTL.
