Yo can do the same blocking some of the contacts between Body and Flash
using a perforated plastic sheet.
The TTL signal uses a dedicated pin on the hot shoe.

1 Is the central contact.
I think that 2 is the TTL contact and 5 is flash ready, but I'm not sure.
Blocking 3 and 4 perhaps you can obtain plain TTL, but I suspect that you will
also loose AF-Assist light and auto zoom operation.
