Having spent months in Italy during the last 10 years I can second the
opinion that a wide angle lens is more useful if you try to capture the
great architecture there. An even better choice would be the 24 TS-E, but
it is rather expensive and I don't know, if Rick is interested in it.
Sometimes a tele is handy for capturing details but it depends on your
shooting style and interest (and budget).
I can't agree that most churches allow flash, it's the other way around -
_some_ allow it. But many guards don't care if you disregard the
"no flash"-signs :-)
In Spain it is possible to use flash almost everywhere.
