I'd just like to clarify that it was not I who expressed the opinion the "n plus
ultra" EF1200 f5.6 L is somehow nonsensical compared to the EF600 f4 with the EF2X. It
is not so. Speed costs in photography and fast,
long lenses are very important to me personally as I can not abide the look of high
ISO films.
I do know for a fact I could make very constructive use of that lens in my photography
. . . effectively the same magnification as my 800mm f5.6 with 1.4 converter and a
full stop faster! Then of course, with the
EF1.4, you have 1680mm/f8 although I appreciate it would be tough to use that.

Still, of course, its cost is astronomical and I will never have one. Still, it would
be neat to see it! And, yes, it would be interesting to see how many Canon has
actually made. I also wonder why it is not IS. I
appreciate its weight helps to stabilize it but it must be very subject to wind
buffeting which is often an overriding problem for my 800/5.6. As a showcase item in
the Canon line, it should have IS. I appreciate they
don't sell many.
