Hi Chris.
the 540EZ on an EOS 1N only offers a-ttl in program
mode anyway. If you use it in Av, Tv or M modes it
reverts to plain ttl flash.
The 550EX uses ttl in all modes including P. So
there's not a lot of difference there. All of the
other features of the 550EX work with the 1N or any
other A-TTL (type B) body. PLUS you get the forward
compatibility with type A and digital bodies that you
wouldn't get with the 540EZ.
I've used both the 540EZ and 550EX on type A bodies
(EOS 55) and on type B bodies (EOS 5 and Elan) and
there's not a lot to pick between them. A-ttl
(imho)is not as good as e-ttl and I used Av, Tv or M
modes with flash 90% of the time anyway. Of course
the 550EX on a type A bodies does have e-ttl, high
speed synch etc which are nice.
IMO - I'd be keeping the 550EX - it's capable of doing
whatever you want with a 1N.
Regards
Gary
