Just to continue this thread a little - I've now had some shots printed
taken with the 550EX on my EOS1n after last Saturday's ice hockey game.
The first ones were taken under fairly bright conditions and with -1 stop
set on the flash, the fill effect is perfect (so subtle you can hardly
tell). The camera was on Av mode with the aperture at f4 (can't remember
what the shutter speed came out to) and I chose Single Shot AF in
combination with the FTM focussing on the 28-70/2.8 zoom.
Later shots, taken in much darker conditions, were also excellent. I had
to focus manually as the AF didn't seem to want to lock on the subject. I
changed to P mode because in Av the camera wanted to drop the shutter
speed to around 1/30 - too slow for me to handhold. Shadows are visible on
the wall behind but are not too harsh. The flash metering is very good
because the exposure is pretty much spot on (although that's difficult to
judge from prints).
In both situations the flash was aimed direct without any kind of diffuser.
