I just checked the Magic Lantern guide for the Elan
II/IIe and it gives a bit more detail. It mentions
that the elan II/50 has has 2 flash metering sensors -
a 6 segment sensor located behind the pentaprism for
e-ttl and a second sensor on the floor of the mirror
box for ttl and a-ttl.
Thinking about it, it makes sense that Canon would use
the existing off film plane sensor to handle non-EX
speedlites. The existing sensor of course handles
a-ttl so it was probably easier to leave it in than to
code it out.
Anyway, I still say that a-ttl is nothing flash anyway
(excuse the bad pun), and it's passing is not mourned.
Only, as I've now learned, it appears it hasn't (yet)
passed away.
Regards
Gary
