Hi Hugo,
I no longer have my 540EZ to check this, but I seem to
recall that the a-ttl preflash didn't happen. Although
maybe this recollection is biased by the fact that I
don't often use P mode for flash work anyway.
However when I checked the manual for my EOS 55 it has
a (very short) reference to EZ speedlites, which says
that "the 3 zone a-ttl or ttl auto flash exposure
system can be used". Unfortunately it gives no
additional details.
I checked the manual for my EOS 30 and it only
mentions "ttl autoflash can be easily used like any AE
mode" - there's no mention of a-ttl.
I had always believed that type A bodies had no
support for a-ttl, but the 50e manual certainly
suggests otherwise, even if the 30 manual omits any
reference to it. Maybe that's due to the fact that
the 50e was the model that replaced a-ttl with e-ttl,
so it rates a mention.
In any case I stand corrected. The day has never gone
to waste when you can say you've learned something
new.
Regards
Gary
