Most experiences have been that the flash is very accurate, including mine,
though I usually use the 550EX. Perhaps your active sensor is not on the
foreground subject, try using FEL, the * with the central sensor on the
subject, recompose and shoot.

There are, but if you have a problem with them you may not be covered under
warranty. Canon's batteries are great, you don't need to mess around with
this aspect.

The battery with the highest charge kicks in first, when it reaches the
level of the other battery, they are then depleted together.

In manual mode only, no ATTL. The D30 is an ETTL or manual mode camera.

Yes, if your shots really are offset it would be a serious malfunction and
one I have not heard of before. I wouldn't call it a magnification effect
but rather a cropping effect, due to the slightly smaller sensor (than 35mm
film area).
