Ah, we all think we know everything ;-) (So, don't believe everything we
say...)

Flashes... ML-3 is very good for macro photography. I would therefore
think that the new E-TTL capable MR-14EX is even better. (I've used the
ML-3, but not the MR-14EX.) In addition to E-TTL (although, I'm not sure
if E-TTL is such an improvement in macro photography as it is in general
photography...) it has flash exposure lock, it can control the ratio
between the two flash tubes and can control additional flashes (550EX or
420EX). Sure, it's more expensive, but you do get a lot more possibilities
with it. So maybe change one 550EX for 420EX (for a cheaper slave) and
get the more expensive MR-14EX. Of course the 420EX works as a slave only
in E-TTL mode, so you lose the manual mode from 550EX doing this.

Do you really need this? I mean, it's expensive, large and heavy, and
quite frankly I've never seen a situation where I would have needed faster
than the normal speed from EOS 3. Sure, it makes it easier to use the
camera vertically.

I don't know what this is - but sure sounds like a flash of some sort 8-)
Have you

At this point, this is a good desicion. You will get very good results
this way.
