As an amateur, not a pro photographer, I'm pretty amazed about this... you
say he should not get a new lens, but rather try multiple flashes with
umbrellas... I would say that using a new lens is many times easier that
what you propose. And if he can not bounce his flash from anywhere,
stepping down to f8 in a dim church will result in those very beautifull
"deer in the headlights"-look photos! But I'm no pro....
