No, in P-mode the camera tries to expose the subject correct, but does not
always take in account the background, because it wants to have a
shutter-speed that is high enough to hand-hold. In Av, Tv or M mode the
camera will (try to) expose the background correctly.

Yes, your right :-) But take also in account that the EOS-5 will use the
cental focus point to measure the needed light for the flash, unless you
link this measurement to the actual focus-point (With CF's) and don't use
ECF. In other words: your subject you want to expose by the flash should be
covered by the actual focus point that is measuring the flash exposure.

Set a longer shutter time, and count the stops when putting it back.

Best methode IMHO is to set it to Av, Tv or M, set a speed and/or f-stop you
want to use to expose the background, set the appropiate CF's as explained
above and shoot away.
