Hi all,

Firstly just to say hello as this is the first time I've posted :-) and
secondly to ask a question about fill flash - I'm new to using flash and I'm
not sure where to start and why what I'm trying doesn't work! I can't find
anything in the manual either.....

I have an EOS 5, a Speedlite 300EZ (from previous EOS 100) and an off camera
flash cord. I would like to be able to use this setup for off camera fill
flash on macros, using the TTL metering if possible.

Firstly, can I get the flash to work at all in aperture priority mode?? I
want to be able to set the camera up as I normally would for macros (i.e.
Av) but just add a bit of fill flash to lighten the shadows. However when I
have the flash on the camera in Av mode it never seems to fire at all. It
works when I set the dial to X synch but this mode sets the shutter speed to
1/60 (I think) and looks like it isn't for fill flash. Is it just that this
flash is too old a model to be able to work with Av mode or is it a
limitation of the EOS 5? What technique should I be using? I don't want to
use any of the program modes as I want full control over the depth of field.

Assuming I can find a way to get it to work at all, so I can set a desired
aperture and have a longish shutter speed for available light, how then can
I then get the flash to reduce power for fill flash - is it possible with
this flash at all? It was bought as a fully automatic unit for my EOS 100
but now I want to move on with what I do with it!

What is everyone's advice here? I have a very small budget for buying
equipment so buying a new flash unit is out of the question unless it is
well under 100.

Best regards,
Caroline
