Hmm, I think it should work in AV mode with TTL metering (maybe you need a dedicated flash cord for TTL, I'm not sure). Maybe the flash is very weak because of the short distance? You should be able to dial in shutter speeds between 1/60 and 1/200 in X mode. Anyway, I think your best option is M(anual) mode. Just change the ISO setting of the camera. Increasing the ISO value will reduce the flash power. You just have to take the "wrong" ISO setting into account when using the cameras ambient light meter to determine your aperture and shutter speed.
