Don:

The 540 will only work in manual mode with the D30 because the D30 has no 
TTL sensor. TTL flash uses a sensor that measures the flash reflecting off 
the film in the camera. The D30 does not have one as the glass cover (or 
filter) over the CMOS sensor would give inaccurate readings.

Kodak apparently tried it with early models and worked very poorly.

ETTL flash uses a preflash that the camera meter reads and then determines 
the proper exposure. Thus you have to buy a new flash to have auto mode.
