Are the picture on the web already adjusted in Photoshop or do
they reflect the actual exposure differencies? In my opinion
they are not really underexposed.
So I can't really answer but here are some possibilities (even
though I don't believe them even myself):
- The flash output power is not enough. Just quessing but
the green light may not be 100% reliable. It might happen that
the flash outputs all it can and even though it underexposes
slightly (?) it shows green because it is "good enough"...
- In the picture where there are windows in the upper part of the
picture the ambient exposure EV value (what the camera thinks)
could be high enough that the flash exposure reduction function
kicks in.
Just quessing though. Maybe it is just that the system is not
completely reliable (on these kinds of black and white subjects)
or then the active metering point was too close to the white
trousers/pants/??? of the male dancer.
Did you use FEL?
I just got my 550EX so after some months I will know better
(on EOS-3 at least)...
