Another advantage of this approach is if the
speedlites are mounted up high as well, pointing
slightly downward, the angle of the lighting means
that the difference in distance (from lighting to
people) between those in the front and tose in the
back is minimised. The result of this is that light
falloff from front to back is reduced, meaning more
even lighting.
A tripod mount arrangemnt on the ladder (or whatever)
allowing relatively slow shutter speeds would be an
advantage in two ways. Firstly it allows sufficient
depth of field from optimal aperture choice without
movement from slow shutter speeds (assuming the ladder
is stable) and secondly it allows the the slower
shutter speeds to gather sufficient ambient lighting
to further reduce any impression of light falloff from
the flashes. When the final print is produced a pro
lab can correct (to an extent) for any colour cast
that the ambient lighting may produce.
Even better may be to use gel filters over the flash
that MATCH the ambient lights colour temperature, then
get the coreections done at printing (there are no
compromises in differenes between the colour
temperature of the flashes and the room lighting that
way).
Regards
Gary
