<IMHO you only need the hood when both of the following conditions obtain,
<but then it is VITAL:
<1) film in camera
<2 lens on camera
<The hood offers at least as much protection to the front of the lens from
<dirt, fingers and physical (impact) damage, PLUS by blocking stray light
<from oblique angles reduces the likelihood of image-damaging flare.
<Contrast and color saturation are also improved.
I just came home from two weeks in france, photographing snowboarding, both
freeride and at competitions, and one thing i noticed at the snowy and
very suny conditions (where shutterspeeds at 4-8000/3.5 with plus one stop
for
the snow. at ISO 100 happend all the time, so the sun was there for sure)
What i saw was that only ONE french used a hood, on a SIGMA lens, then
there ware MANY with big white L:s, couple of 20mm 2.8,
20-35 2.8L, 20-35 3.5-4.5, 28-70 2.8L linses with no
hood, no UV (for protection) filters or polararazer filters... i was the
only
one.. so i started to think i was doing something wrong ;)
Just courious, do they have ANY reason for that???
