IMHO you only need the hood when both of the following conditions obtain,
but then it is VITAL:
1) film in camera
2 lens on camera
The hood offers at least as much protection to the front of the lens from
dirt, fingers and physical (impact) damage, PLUS by blocking stray light
from oblique angles reduces the likelihood of image-damaging flare.
Contrast and color saturation are also improved.
