The 380EX has been replaced by the 420EX, which adds a swivel head (380EX is
tilt only), and it can be used as a slave flash in wireless E-TTL mode.

The Canon EOS system offers a wireless E-TTL flash system, where you can set
up multiple slave flashes, and open up more interesting lighting options.
It's less time consuming to set up, and produces good results with negative
film.

Note that a 550EX flash or a ST-E2 transmitter is needed as the master. This
unit is connected to the camera, and controls the other flashes.
