Hi Susan,

The 200E and 220EX are not really useful for anything
more than daylight fill, so for portraits, I'd forget
about them.

The 380EX has been replaced by the 420EX - basically
similar but with a few improvements - slightly more
powerful, with a tilt AND swivel head (the 380EX head
doesn't swivel) and it also has the capability of
being a remote slave (but not a master).

The 540EZ is still on sale, but the 550EX is a very
similarly specified flash with the added capability of
being a remote master and/or slave. It also allows
high speed flash sync (i.e. flash at shutter speeds of
up to 1/4000 second on the Elan IIe - the 380EX and
420EX both also support this) and uses e-ttl rather
than a-ttl for exposure (again ditto for the
380/420EX's). COncensus seems to be that e-ttl
produces much better results than a-ttl.

A 550EX combined with a 420EX would be a good
combination. Which order you get them in is up to you
and what you can afford at the time (the 550ex is a
lot more expensive than the 420EX, but has a lot more
features). Have a look at the following urls for more
information:
