I must take exception to that.
Well, OK, I wouldn't recommend them for portraits either,
but I've found the 220EX together with Off Shoe Cord 2
and a flash arm very useful in macro photography,
specifically with live insects: it's plenty powerful
enough when the distance is less than 50cm, and
much lighter and easier to handle than bigger flashes.
I only wish they'd make it usable as wireless slave --
then a ST-02 and two of them would be really nice.
As to the original question, I agree with what most
others have said: as a general-purpose flash for
the Elan, any of 550EX, 420EX or 380EX would do.
The 380EX's lack of swivel makes it inconvenient
for bounce shots, especially vertical ones,
and it won't work as a wireless slave,
so unless you can find one real cheap I'd go
for the 420EX, or if money is no object
get the 550EX.
If you are of the type who wants to be able
to override all automations (is your body
in "M" mode most of the time?) you'll want
the 550EX, or possibly the 540EZ (which has
all manual controls but poorer automatics
and no wireless capability).
