The models ending in EX support the E-TTL capabilities of your Elan IIe
camera, so you might want to stick to one of them (220EX, 380EX, 420EX or
550EX). The 380EX may have been replaced by the 420EX, if so it's a shame
because it was a nice flash and quite a bit cheaper than the 420EX. I guess
getting rid of it was their only way to sell all those 220EX's. The 220EX is
not much stronger than the flash on your body, plus doesn't tilt or swivel.

If you want a Canon-only solution to master/slave flash, you'll need either
a 550EX flash or ST-E2 Transmitter as a trigger, and only the 420EX and
550EX function as slaves. There are other non-Canon solutions to multiple
flashes as well.
