Hi Jim,
Skylight filters come in two common vaireties 1A and
1B. The 1B is a little bit darker than the 1A.
They're a faintly pinkish coloured filter that is
designed to remove the slight blue cast that you can
get when photographing a subject IN SHADE, under a
clear blue sky.
They can also be left on if you like alightly warmer
tone to your pictures or for use with some electronic
flashes that have a higher colour temperature than
daylight film is balanced for.
Of course they also fall into the category of lens
protector, just like a UV.
IMO it's worthwhile keeping a UV/Skylight filter on my
lenses except for critical work, or where excessive
flare may be a problem. I know I'm always careful
about how I handle my equipment - but I have no
control over other people who may bump into me (or
whatever) perhaps carrying something that may damage
an unprotected front lens element. I've also had lens
hoods come off in my camera bag and a filter can make
all the difference in the world then!
I know that goes against the general tide of opinion
here, but I'd rather replace a filter than a lens.
And if cleaning it causes the filter to scratch or
whatever, it's still cheaper to replace.
Of course, continuing against the tide even more, I
often keep a polarizer on my lens, even in cloudy
conditions, to get a bit more colour saturation.
Either way, there's *usually* a filter on my lenses.
Regards
Gary
