Hi Peter,
I was wrong on two counts. I'll explain.
The first count:
Hoya DO make 2 different Skylight filters. They're
called the Skylight and Skylight 1B which are made in
the Phillipines and Japan respectively. So as I
discovered when I physically checked them, they don't
call it a 1A, it's just a Skylight, although my
apparently faulty memory had 1A embedded there. The 1B
also comes a HMC version.
I still suspect that they USED to call them 1A's, but
all my old gear was stolen about 2 years ago and all
of my filters along with it, so I can't verify that at
all. That theft is the reason I now own an EOS
system, but even then, as now, almost all of the
filters I owned were Hoya (it's by far the most
commonly sold (decent) brand in Australia - Tiffen,
B+W etc are very rarely seen in the shops here) and I
strongly recall having had several 1A's, but memory is
a fickle thing.
BTW Peter, I did check the THK site before I wrote my
last response, and as you've pointed out they only
list Skylight 1B filters, however they're the US
distributor, not the manufacturer. As I said last
time, it's quite possible that the plain Skylights
(well I did originally incorrectly call them 1A's) are
not even imported into the US (for some marketing
reasons), just as the EOS 3000 (entry level model
below the EOS 300/ Rebel 2000) is not imported into
the US but IS sold in Australia (gratuitous on topic
reference ;-) ).
The second count:
I originally said that the Skylight 1B was slightly
darker than the 1A (correctly known as skylight). In
fact the reverse is true, the Skylight is a darker
tint than the Skylight 1B. I scanned the different
filters and their cases and they can be seen as the
following url:

Gary
