This is well possible. I had the same experience with the predecessor of 
this lens (80-200 f/2.8 L) with a B&W multicoated UV filter. I had 
forgotten to take it off after a shooting in the rain and it ruined my 
night shots (car trails etc) by very noticeable ghosting. Unfortunately, 
I don't have shots without the filter to compare with, though. So it could
as well have been introduced by the lens itself (at least partially).
