Hi Ken,
ETTL uses preexposure flash for metering and wireless ETTL (WETTL)
slave control, closely followed by the controlled power flash for
exposure.
A simple optical slave trigger will react to the preflash, and will
not be recycled fast enough when the shutter opens.
It is possible to overcome this by using Flash Exposure Lock (FEL),
then waiting the 5 or 10 seconds for the slave to recharge before
releasing the shutter.
Does this help?

P.S. I got the 550EX first, and was hoping to get a 420EX later as
a slave much later. But the AF assist problem with the 550EX on
the EOS 7 might speed up the second purchase. Seems like a good
excuse to me :-)
